Students' dress sense is boring?

BY: NURIMAN

First impression counts. If the saying is true then what does one make of the many different fashion styles of students from Temasek Polytechnic?

From dancers to slackers to cosplaying, students seem to turn to fashion to express their personalities and preferences. We preview the more stereotypically interesting ones.

The dress-down-because-I’m-Lazy-to-dress up

One of the most common forms of dressing is the t-shirt (usually camp or school t-shirts) paired with FBTs and slippers.

Spotted mostly amongst students in the School of Engineering, School of Applied Science and School of Informatics and IT, these students seem to prefer dressing down because they feel no need to spend a small amount of energy to make themselves look good.

Dolyce Low, a third year student from the Diploma in Biotechnology said,” I find it too tiring to spend so much time to get ready. It’s only school. Why should I bother? That means I have to wake up earlier, which I do not think is possible since I always end up having to rush down to school.”

Grace Phua, a student from the Diploma in Retail management added,” I really don’t see the point of bothering to wear something nice to school. Its just school, not some fashion parade. I would want to wear something comfortable.”

The Dancers

Step into the world of hip-hop where dressing up means wearing oversized top and pants paired with high cut shoes.

Getting their cue from dancers including the B-Boys from Korea, these students usually have an interest in dance.

Fion Quak, a student from the Diploma in Facility Design and Management said,” I wear like this to school since I’m in TPDE (TP Dance Ensemble). It’s the ‘in’ thing amongst dancers all over the world and its also quite comfortable to wear this when I dance.”

Baddruddin Ramlee, another student from the same course agreed with her.

“I totally agree. As a member of TPDE, I not only have to dance well, I have to look the part of a dancer too,” he adds.
The Cosplayers

Cosplay (short for costume play) is the art of dressing up like your favourite character. In the US, even dressing up as a Power Ranger in considered cosplay but in Singapore, the term is mostly used when one dresses up like one’s favourite Anime or Manga (Japanese comic) character.

It was therefore interesting to realize that there are students who dress up in costumes to school.

Muhammad Farhan, a student from the Diploma in Retail and Hospitality Design was one such student.

When asked why he dresses as such to school, he replied,” I love cosplaying. It gives me an avenue to express myself and my love for Anime. At the same time, since I am always in school because I have tons of projects to complete, I only have time to dress up in school. I don’t really mind that it’s hot and humid in Singapore. The Design School is air-conditioned.”

With such a variety of interesting fashion styles of students, whoever said that school was such a boring place?
