BY: LIU YING

Food speaks the common language of Singaporeans. It crosses boundaries of age, gender and even race. This is even more so for desserts, which no one can resist. The Youth Voice checks out some of the popular dessert hangout places that students love to frequent.

Teadot:

Tea lovers can now have a place to chill out with the accompaniment of wide ranging tea beverages at Teadot, a newly established Singapore café specialising in tea. Situated at level 3 of Tampines 1, the café occupies a huge area of the floor, adopting a refreshing open concept for the layout while looking out to the rest of the mall from the third floor balcony. With comfy chairs and tables, Teadot cafés attracts youngsters to hang out with friends or have studying sessions with their laptops.

The tea beverages are served in three sizes, namely "Puny"(S$5.95), "Regular"(S$6.55) and "Generous" (S$6.95). From the foamy and milky “Green Tea Latte”, innovative “Little Red Fuji” apple frappe, delightfully sweet "Angel's Breath" hot tea to the icy “Lollipop Earl Grey Latte” dosed with butterscotch, tea lovers are spoilt for choice at Teadot.

Besides serving tea concoctions, Teadot sells desserts specially sourced from a five-star hotel, including raspberry domes, strawberry tarts and mild jackfruit cakes. Coffee addicts can get their coffee fix if they insist on having coffee at this tea place, with coffee beverages quirkily named such as "Tired Coffee Latte", "Boring Cappuccino", "Lonely Coffee Frappe" and such.

Tea lover, Chan Hoi Hin, 19, frequents Teadot for their tea and also for the cosy ambience. She said: “Studying at Teadot is awesome as I love their teas here. The chairs are comfy, my friends and I often study for hours at this café.”

Rochor Original Beancurd:

The famous silky Rochor beancurd.
Famous for their silky textured beancurd, Rochor Original Beancurd house located near Lasalle College of the Fine Arts, attracts crowds just for this traditional dessert. Also known as “Tau Huey” by many, the beancurd from Rochor Original Beancurd house easily melts in one mouth and many patronisers come back for more, even though long queues are a common sight at the shop.

Alex Ho, 19, fell in love with the sleek tender texture of the shop’s beancurd and proclaims that “it is not possible to not love Rochor Tau Huey”. Not only that, the dessert holds a nostalgic memory for him: “When I was a kid, I would always look forward to Sundays as they were declared Tau Huey days, since my mum would buy beancurd for me weekly without fail. The smooth and sweet taste of Rochor beancurd brings back childhood memories.”

Apart from selling beancurd, the shop also sells traditional snacks such as Fritters Doughs (You Tiao), Butterfly Buns, Salted Sweet Buns, and Portuguese Egg Tarts.

Yami Yogurt:

The Yami Yogurt outlet at Bugis Junction.

Craving for a creamy icy snack that is yet also healthy? Yami Yogurt would be the answer then. The low fat frozen yogurt is relatively high in protein, minerals and vitamins, making it a yummy wholesome snack for all. With the presence of live cultures in the yogurt, it aids digestion, helps relives skin irritation and provides a good amount of calcium.

To add on to the wholesomeness of the yogurt, a huge range of healthy toppings such as fruits, nuts and cereals are available for choice. Two out of four Yami flavours are changed every week, and loyalty cards are issued to customers for rebating purposes, to encourage patronisation.

Chee Pui Ye, 20, was introduced to Yami Yogurt by her friends and took an instant liking to it. She reasons her liking for the yogurt: “Yami is a healthier snack, coupled with the delicious toppings, it is not a surprise that it is getting popular among youngsters nowadays. I can finally snack without feeling the guilt of eating something that isn’t healthy.”

There are a total of eleven Yami Yogurt outlets around the island. Also, the company created a Facebook account which notifies “Yami Yogurt fans” of the flavours available weekly and monthly.

Tom’s Palette:

Customers can choose two flavours for one cup, regardless of the cup's size.

Chilli chocolate, Rice & Spice, Seaweed, Tofu & Dates – one would not associate these condiments as ice-cream flavours, yet at Tom’s Palette, these are just a few of the quirky ice-cream flavours the shop has to offer.

Located at Shaw Tower, Tom’s Palette appears to be an unnoticeable ice-cream parlour, yet this tiny ice-cream outlet has garnered quite some amount of media reports over the years, with positive reviews and favourable feedback from patronisers.

Apart from interesting flavours offered monthly as the shop’s attraction, another selling point of Tom’s Palette would be that the shop’s ice cream is purely homemade. The sugar level of the ice cream is reduced to half, and eggs are used as an agent to increase the ice cream’s richness. Natural ingredients are favoured and procured, resulting in ice-cream full of savoury freshness.

One of the frequent patronisers, Foo Suan Yang, 23, commented that the ice-cream from Tom’s Palette never fails to surprise him with the funky flavours offered. The parlour has now become a usual hangout spot for him and his friends: “The ice-cream flavours at Tom’s Palette are different from the usual ice-cream shops out there, and the shop owners are friendly and patient with customers. We can try out all the flavours we are interested in before deciding on our purchase, which is good as we always have difficulties deciding on which flavour we want!”
